In December 2017, a deeply disturbing incident occurred at the GD Birla Education School in south Kolkata. A four-year-old student was sexually assaulted by two school teachers — Abhishek Roy and Md. Mofizul. The accused allegedly lured the child into the bathroom with chocolates. After the incident, the girl identified the perpetrators when shown their photographs.
Following the assault, enraged parents protested outside the school for days, demanding justice and highlighting severe security lapses. Parents pointed out that despite a similar incident in 2014, the school failed to install CCTV cameras, indicating negligence towards student safety.
The two accused were charged under Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, leading to life imprisonment sentences along with a fine of ₹50,000 each. The court also ordered ₹5 lakh in compensation to the victim.
Impact: Before hiring teachers, the school could have conducted thorough background checks through Safebox, ensuring no history of misconduct or criminal activity was associated with any employee.
Impact: Even after initial recruitment, periodic verification could have flagged any subsequent criminal behavior or suspicious activity among staff.
Impact: Formalized, secure contracts with teachers would reinforce accountability, with mandatory clauses for periodic background checks and monitoring.
Impact: GD Birla School could have demonstrated active due diligence to regulatory authorities and parents, thus strengthening trust and accountability.
Impact: Implementation of Safebox's verification ecosystem would foster a safer environment for students by minimizing the risk posed by unverified staff and visitors.
Impact: The lack of CCTV could have been partially mitigated through Safebox's real-time personnel tracking and verification alerts.
